Border Collies are one of the hardest working breeds in the world (not to mention SMARTEST)…What this means to you, having one for a pet (as opposed to using it to herd sheep)…is that it has a TON of excess energy!! So, when you go out, and it’s excited to see you…then it’s SUPER excited (too much energy)…

What I’d start doing with this dog, is playing ball, frisbee, walking…anything that dimishes excess energy (which also improves hearing :) )…To work with her on the jumping…First…all of the above “games”, especially walking her will open her mind to “respecting’ you. The method of training them that “four on the floor gets the treat”, is a passive training. When you go out to feed, and she jumps up, turn away, keep turning away…DO NOT say a word (don’t say no, down, off…NO SCREAMING)…zip the lips…DO NOT make eye contact…avert eyes and turn away (giving your voice or eye contact is “giving attention” in her eyes, and that’s all she’s after (doesn’t matter to her, if it’s good attention or bad attention)…She will be confused (and hopefully confused enough to put all four on the floor)…the VERY second she has all four on the floor…give the food to her. This will take a few lessons (and you will have to invest a little time)…but a BC is a VERY smart breed…I think she’ll learn this quickly, like maybe only 3 or 4 times.

Don’t forget the exercise…BC’s need a TON of it…

She jumps because she’s excited to see you! Try pushing her off, saying NO and giving her a treat when she gets down. Say it stern so she knows you’re not playing. I have an 18 month border collie and he learned fairly quickly. He can sit, shake, high five, lay, crawl, count and roll over (I had a lot of time on my hands) Anyway, hope she stops. =-D

You might have to hold her down. Scream at her and make sure she knows shes getting introuble. Shes still a puppy in her mind, so she’s going to jump until she grows out of that.

whenever she jumps on you, say “no” and then force her to get down. once you force her to go down, give her a treat. do this every time she jumps on you and eventually she will learn the command b/c she will know she gets a reward. eventually when you say “no” she will go down immediately, knowing she will get a treat. but dont give her those huge bones for treats. just little low-cal ones. but this wont come quickly. it will take time. so be patient with her and then she’ll do what you want.
