How can I make my dress shorter?

I brought a really nice denim dress last year but I’ve only worn it once. I have a sewing machine and I’m a textile student so anything that has to be sewed can be. The dress is just below my knees and I’ld like it somewhere between mid thigh and above my knee cap. Any help is appreciated :)

I am sorry but I know how to do this by hand you try the dress on fold up and pin up to the desired length - I think what you want is too short - and sew a hem.

fold the dress in half determine how short you want it, put your finger were the line would be to cut it now add about 2 cm (move your finger down 2 centimeters) to allow for the hem that will be the new line to cut it at it will be easy to pin the invisible line with safety pins so you now know were to cut use a ruler to get the line straight you can even mark the line with chalk instead of safety pins then just cut along the line, and then fold the bottom of the now cut dress up 1-2 cms towards the inside of the dress (not the outside that will be visible) then just sew along a straight line to attach that fold to the inner edge of the dress that’s your hem hope this made sense, it would have been easier to draw a picture of what im trying t say lol
