How can I get calcium?

I never drink milk (I choose not to, I cant stand the taste) and I rarely eat cheese or anything from the dairy category. What can I do to get calcium?

Answer #1

The best source of calcium is actually dark leafy vegetables. Milk is actually a poor source of calcium because it is so high in protein. Our bodies have to maintain a very narrow range of pH, if we get too acid or basic we die. Any protein we consume beyond our needs is converted to carbohydrates but the process makes our system acid. To counteract this our body uses calcium from our bones to neutralize this acidity. If you look at the countries that have the higest rate of osteoporosis they are in fact the same countries that have the highest dairy consumption. Drinking milk to prevent osteoporosis is like trying to put out a fire with gasoline. There are areas of Africa where women consume less calcium than Americans do yet osteoporosis is rare even among women who have had several kids; the difference is that they eat diets of tubers and vegetables and don’t eat the high protein diet Americans do.

Some antacid tablets double as calcium suppliments. Go grab some rolaids. :)

Some orange juices have a lot of calcium in them. I also think beans and broccoli have a lot…

And I guess you could always just take a calcium supplement…

Some breads also have a lot of calcium. I used to eat this one kind of bread (although I can’t find it in stores anymore), and two pieces of it had as much calcium as one glass of milk.

Just read the nutrition labels on things.
