How can I find out my nationality ?

My aunt’s family is from new Orleans Louisiana then moved up.they all have the hair texture of an indian or creole person.and my dad I think I jamaican he is not sure but his family is also from the Louisiana area. but he looks more african american.my friends say I am creole and jamaican.but is it possible and I want to find out my nationality.like I found out that my last name is a mostly southern last name.so is ay mom’s side of the family.my grandparents are dead and my family is not sure.can you please help me out ?

Where were you born? That’s your nationality. I think what you want to know is your ethnicity.

Anyhow, I think it is worth mentioning that biologically speaking, there is no such thing as race. There is no “black” gene or “white” gene. Ethnicity is a human invention based on minor superficial differences that don’t actually mark how closely related two individuals are. Two random people from Africa are no more likely to be more genetically similar than either of them would be from a random person from Europe.

You’d have to do research on all the last names of your family to find out where everybody was from….really though you’re trying to find your heritage, your “nationality” is dependent on where you were born. Eg, you’re American as you were born here.

But, I’d strongly suggest making a list of all the surnames you can find and then researching those….you can use something like ancestry.com, or a similar website, that will help you in your research after you talk to all the members of your family (also see if they have already done the work, if they have, it’ll save you a lot of time).
