How can I compress my files on mac?

I want to compress some movie files on my macbook, but when I tried the zip file was the same size as the original files, so I don’t see the point. The original files are 1.37 GB all together and the zip file is 1.36 GB. Is this all it can compress it to? I really need to get space on my computer, so yeahhh… help please?

Answer #1

Some file types can’t be compressed in a meaningful way…an external hard drive is best for that kind of thing.

Also, you can tar a file. http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/14503/gui-tar that may yeild better compression of a given file than using standard zip which is included.

Answer #2

Right click on the file, and choose “compress” from the pop-up menu. That should compress it by at least 20-30%.
