How are shells made?

I was just having a lightbulb moment today and wondered how are shells made? Like, I know that crabs and stuff move into them, But how are they made in the first place? My sister said that sea creatures made them (like spiders and webs) but I’m not sure.

Answer #1

You’re thinking of hermit crabs, which don’t make their own shells. Other mollusks and cephalopods secrete their own shells from special glands on their bodies. Most of the time, the shell is attached to their bodies, forming the animal’s exoskeleton.

Answer #2

Shells are made when the creature who ones it is being made, then when the shell is too small the creature leaves it and goes looking for a new one which another creature left.
