How many hours can an under 18 work in the UK?

I have a friend who is 17, he works 10 hours on saturdays, and only has a 30 minutes break. is this allowed?

Answer #1

Under the age of 18 you are classed as young worker. If you work for more than 4 1/2 hours, you are entitled to a 30 minute lunch break, so that in itself is allowed, however, with some exceptions, a person classed as young worker cannot be made to more than 8 hours per day, I not sure how this applies to part-time work, but I think it’s the same. Anyway, heres the links from the directgov website which covers regulations for working hours.
