How do honors degrees work in the US?

Im curious. Here, a bachelors degree takes three years, and if you do honors, you do a year of research in addition to this. From what I have heard, it usually takes four years to do a bachelors degree in the US, so does that mean its five years for honors, or does everyone do honors or does something entirely different happen?

I can only speak for the honors program in psychology (I forget what exactly they call it, they have a particular name). Not everyone does it, I believe you have to have a certain GPA, and it really is your choice. You do it in your 4th year the same time as you’re doing the rest of your classes. Also this is the year you’d be applying to graduate programs (there’s no real point in doing honors if you’re not going to grad school), and doing the GRE (the graduate school standardized exam), and your upper division courses so it is a lot to take on. I am guessing, the reason the U.S. has a four year program instead of a 3 year that seems to be more common worldwide is because they have a lot more general education requirements.

Oh and this is different from graduating with honors, which happens automatically if you have a high enough GPA (that is the only requirement).

Answer #3

would you do the same kind of honors programme as you do here? For us, honors year is a year of research. You have classes along side it, but its mostly about your own research project. A lot of people here will do honors just to give them research experience so they can work in that area, although it does mean you can go straight onto PhD
