HELP! I Need to transfer a reel to reel to CD

I have a customer who has an old reel to reel tape and has no way to hear it (it is her mom who was an opera singer now deceased) I do all inds of transfers and thought I could pull this off so I eBayed an old Aai 4000 reel to reel and bought the cabling I thought would work but the spindles keep flying off and I can’t get the threading right. I found one old Operating Manual in Britain … so as I started out I will end … HELP!

Well, I am not going to be a huge amount of help, but I can at least lead you in the right direction. A reel to reel player needs to be at a consistent speed to work so you should should make sure the motors are running smoothly and not getting jumpy. The pinch rollers are necessary to keep the audio tape in place while the motor pulls the tape through. First, get the player to work for you by making sure that everything is in place properly and solidly put in. When you can get the thing to work right then I would suggest recording from the reel to reel to a simple cassette recorder. Then you can take your cassette recording and it should be much more easy to transfer onto a digital medium like a CD or an MP3. If you want to clarify your problem further, feel free to add to this thread or post a new question.
