Is it harder to diagnose yourself than to diagnose a patient?

This is just a random qustion for someone in medicine/psychology.

Answer #1

I don’t know, but a way to find out would be to infect yourself with AIDS and attempt to figure out why you feel so sick.

hahaha…

Answer #3

I would presume its alot harder to diagnose yourself than it is to diagnose other people both psychologically and physically. We tend to miss things, not notice things, or go into denial about things that other people can see and we may not. Its alot easier for an outsider to come in with no emotional attatchment to you, to honestly see your problems and notice things that you may not. We often see who we truly are through others eyes.

I would guess medically it may be slightly easier (not always though) because there are blood tests and x-rays and such you can take to confirm your diagnosis. Psychological illnesses dont have any sort of tests to back up a diagnosis. There are written tests, but obviously anyone who has studied psychology would already know what the tests are testing for and what the questions are and so they’d be invalid. Self diagnosis would be a very iffy thing, people often dont see things in perspective, or they’re in denial about many things. Odds are you probably know if you’ve got major depression, or say a specific phobia, or something basic like that. Personality disorders, psychotic disorders, substance abuse disorders, etc get a little bit trickier and generally need an outside diagnosis.
