Is it hard to go abroad with AFS program?

Answer #1

I’m going to go abroad to India in 16 months. I’m applying for a scholarship with AFS, but if I don’t get it, I’m going with Rotary Youth Exchange. AFS has a facebook group if you want to ask people questions about going abroad, fundraising ideas, etc—- http://funadvice.com/r/brp58v2paqc

I officially started fundrasing this month, and I have made $100(:

No prob!(: I should also mention if you join the Facebook group, a lot of them are going to say that you should go outside your comfort zone… I mean, Japan was my first choice, but after seeing all of the scholarship opportunities for India, I changed my mind… Here is what one AFSer said, it case you don’t join:

First of all, I really, really think you need to truly be open to other countries, and not just the ones that jump out at you when reading a list. You don’t know what your life in Japan would be like. Or Italy. Or Honduras. Or China. Or Indonesia. Or Russia. Or Turkey. Or anywhere else. The country itself really isn’t that important in having a good experience. Your host family, your classmates, the local AFS support people, and most of all your attitude are SO much more important than what set of arbitrary borders you happen to be in.
