Do you think handicapped women should be allowed to get pregnant?

I’m wondering what people think about handicap people wanting to reproduce. I was watching a show tonight and it had a Down Syndrome pregnant woman in it. It got me thinking…should they be allowed to have babies just like everyone else? Or should someone step in and stop them? Why do you feel this way? I’ve heard people argue both sides, I’m curious to see what ya’ll think about it.

Answer #1

I agree if they can’t care for themself then they would not be able to care for a child. It would be heartbreaking to see child services take a child away from an adult that is fully capable of taking care of them just because they have Down Symdrome.

Answer #2

I think people with a disability has the right to have a baby with there husband

Answer #3

I have no objection to anyone wanting to reproduce… it’s about raising the baby then… and it would wholly depend on the level of functioning of the individual, I’m not going to generalize about a whole group of people, some people are capable of raising children and some arent (btw this is true of non disabled people too)

Answer #4

its a tough situation. as people who are we to tell anyone else they can not reproduce? but, when it is questionable whether the parent can provide all the necessary care needed for a child someone should probably step in. I guess that what child protective services are for. I think no one should step in unless it is clear the parents are not physically able enough to take care of the child(ie: not able to work to support paying for their children)

blerggher That’s pretty much what my thoughts on it where. I’m not saying they are not capable of taking care of child, because they have many different levels of the disease, some can care for themselves and some can’t. I do however, think if they can not care for themselves, someone should step in because they would not be able to care for the child.

Well, I have no problem with any woman reproducing as long as they can be responsible for taking care of the baby. As far as women that are handicapped, some of them are capable of taking care of a baby and some aren’t. For example: I have a friend whoes visually impaired like myself and we’re both blind since birth. I have to say, she’s pregnant with her first child. I have to also say, she’s quite capable of taking care of kids since she’s even baby-sat. Even her kniece and nephew. I’m so proud of her that she can do that. Of course she’s also married to a good man that’s very understanding, and helpful. I think for those with certain handicaps whether it’d be blindness, or other disabilities, I believe that most of these women such as myself are more then capable to take care of a baby. Women with handicaps are just like anyone else. They can perform just like any other woman. Even I’m capable to get pregnant being blind and I would be capable enough to take care of the baby. I’m not being judgemental or anything, I’m only saying what I think about this topic. This is a great topic though. This is a topic that doesn’t come up often.

I depends if they are able to take care of themselves and a baby I think they should but if there not able to take care of themselves then there would be know way they could take care of a baby. but I also belive evryone deserves to have the love and the light a baby bring into life.

It all sounds well and good, but I am just wondering how a person or persons with a severe mental handicap would come to actually have sexual intercourse in the first place.
