I like to take the hair in pieces and use a pick or comb (but you could use a brush if you want to) and pick upwards instead of down like you usually comb your hair.
Back Combing , I know it well . well , if your looking for a hair change , its easier , to get the “ scene “ hair cut , so it all makes sense, when your backcombing .
I put my first layers in a pony tail , and bacl comb the bottom layer , and hair spray it , then I let down the hair , it looks great .
