Gwen Stefani Quiff

Can someone please tell me how to make the perfect “quiff” ? (I think that’s what it’s called..lol) I got the basics, but I’m a perfectionist who won’t be satisfied until I get it right. I found a helpful video on youtube, where I gathered what I know so far.. the main thing that I’m struggling with is the “building of the quiff”.. the guy in the video took sections of the “triangle section” and began ratting (hate that word) them to give it the lift. then smooth it over with the front piece… yeah, yeah…
it makes sense. but for some reason it wasn’t quite as simple as he made it look. the “ratting” didn’t seem to be working out.. Another thing, He said to secure it with bobby pins. But I’d like to hear some other options as long as it ain’t tacky :)
