Like Irene says, its genetic. Men are far more prone to baldness, because it is a sex-linked gene. It is on the X chromosome. Because women have two X chromosomes, if one of the genes is faulty, the other can compensate for it. Men, on the other hand only have one X, so if it is the faulty gene they inherit, they will go bald. As far as I know, it can actually be from any side of the family, and in the case of women, it must come from both.

Male baldness is linked to a hormone called dihydrotestestosterone. This hormone is important for male characteristics, but you also have receptors for it in your scalp, so if you have high levels of it, it can make your hair fall out.
