What does it mean when a guinea pig pops it's head up when you pet it ?

Whenever my mom or my sister pet my guinea pig’s head, he pops it up & squeals, i always make them stop because i think their hurting him or something. O.o

Answer #1

Well think about it, if you walked on all fours and had your head down and were eating or just staring at the ground because it’s right in front of your face, and suddenly this giant hand or unknown object came down and started slamming on your back, what would you do? Probably look up to see what the hell was going on.

Answer #2

No i mean like they will be just holding him & they’ll be petting him for a couple of minutes then out of no where he pops his head up, not like he’s looking up but like, jerking his head up.

Answer #3

Well Guinea Pigs have very sensitive ears, so maybe he heard someone drop something.

Answer #4

Guinea pigs are really shy, nervous, and scared most of the time. It takes time for them to get used to people. When you touch it, it jerks because you surprised it…and it got a bit scared. Just like if you were sitting in your room, and all of a sudden, a hand reached down from behind you and touches your back. Would you not jump and scream?

You can get it used to you by gently wrapping it in a towel, and holding it on your chest while you watch TV, read a book, or listen to music. After a few weeks of doing this, your guinea pig should be used to you.

I used to have a guinea pig, when they squeal…it doesn’t always mean it’s being hurt. Most of the time, it’s just squealing because it’s nervous or scared. Just like a dog whines, or a pig squeals. It’s normal.

@Cassie That was too funny! XD

Answer #6

He seems just surprised and scared like Angelee said. This isn’t surprising behavior for a guinea pig if you just got him. Guinea pigs are really senstive and have to get used to you first. Doesn’t mean he’s hurt. When I first got my guinea pig he would be scared all the time but he slowly got used to me and it’s now all good. I suggest just holding him whenever you can and talk to him and pet him and then hopefully it’ll get better

Answer #7

When my guinea pigs do this i normally tickle them under the chin, they seem to like it
