How do I say goodbye to him, without causing too much pain?

No matter which way you say goodbye, goodbyes will always hurt. The only way to minimize the pain is to be be gentle, but honest. Use “I” statements (I feel, I want, I think, etc). The minute you use “you” statements it kind of puts blame on one person, which usually isn’t the case and usually just starts arguments.

If it is temporary (as in your will see him again, even if it is a while away), why not avoid saying goodbye and instead say ‘see you later’, which doesn’t sound quite so bad to say. It is understandable that any form of goodbye will be upsetting and painful though. Just say thank you for him having been a par of your life for so long, and that you will miss him, but good luck for the future and you really hope he is happy and successful in whatever he is going off to do :)
