You want to make it focused towards the job. So depending where you're starting at, talk about certain skills you want to improve, areas you want to get better at, things you'd like to master (i.e. gaining expertise) in order to get you on that path towards increased responsibility (a goal). You dont want to have too many goals. Keep it focused.
Here's an example
5 years career goals statement: to become an expert in the IT field who consults firms. Done: Learned 2 years at Cisco labs. Experience in IT networking components and products. Means: I intend to work 5 years at a challenging, cutting edge technology position where I can enhance my skills and knowledge. During these 5 years I aim to: • Take new perspectives and eventually managing/influencing others.
• Communicate with the industry leaders and to develop my network.
• Learn business management for establishing my business in consulting after these 5 years. After 5 years: • An IT cosultant.
