I’m not sure of the statistics but women usually die during child birth because of losing a large amount of blood. But as they say, the rate of dying during or after child birth is very low.

I don’t know numbers, but this is possible. A hemmorage could cause death.

Relax, if you’re living in the UK. The UK, like all modern, industrialised societies with healthcare systems, has a very, very low ‘maternal mortality’ rate - which means dying during or immediately after childbirth. (For example, on http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/health/article2937080.ece you can read that ‘The Department of Health (…) believes that Britain is one of the safest places in the world to give birth.’

In the developing countries, maternal death is a big problem, due to lack of proper pre-natal care, insanitary conditions during childbirth, poor nutrition.

What a mother can die of? If she’s in poor health (undernourished, anaemic) she may literally bleed to death if she gives birth without proper supervision. And all other kinds of complications may occur - ones that you WILL NOT FACE in the UK!

Love from susila (who has worked in Nepal, which has one of the world’s worst maternal mortality rates)

If the mother is in good health and has good medical care the odds of maternal death as a complication of pregnancy are very low. It happens but it is rare. Mom is probably in more danger driving to the hospital than from her pregnancy. Wikipedia lists the current US maternal death rate as 11 in 100,000.
