How do I help a depressed friend?

I have a friend who live a generally good life, but every once in a while when they break up with a boyfriend or have a fight with their family, they call me and say things like they want to die and life is not worth living and why does everything always go wrong for them.

This person does see a counselor but my question is when they call me to talk, (I am one of the best friends) I am usually speechless and provide not much comfort at all. I need to know what i should say to comfort or reassure the person? I am quite bad with thinking on my feet and usually go blank. What do I say?

Hmm. I get very depressed all the time, and i’m always looking upon a friend for comfort. Just let them know how much you care for them and how you’d be lost without them. Let them know how true of a friend you are to them and couldn’t imagine something happening to them.

It’ll help, if not a lot, it will a little. Trust me.

well mr_super123,

well, tho you don’t have the potential to be one of the adviser but just say out what you can think of. motivation or encouragement, tho personally you’re weak yourself in the sense of inner strength. just to prevent them from doing sumthing stupid.

Tell them that no matter how bad things seem, they always get better and its not worth thinking about ending their life over. Becos everyone has a fight, everyone has their heart broken and everyone gets over it eventually. Relate to them, tell them about a fight you’ve had with your parents and how eventually it gets betters, give them hope about their life being better thats all you have to do. They are just looking for support thats all.
