Apparently, this is not an uncommon problem with FedEx ... does it concern you, or do you still plan to use FedEx in the future?

I avoid using FedEx because I've seen this type of thing quite often. I might ad that UPS drivers conduct themselves very professionally and never do thing like that based on what I've seen. Another point: At my home and place of employment, it's the same UPS driver every time and we are on a first name basis. With FedEx, it's ALWAYS someone different and I wonder about the employee turn over rate with the company. UPS may cost alittle more to ship, but you get what you pay for. Our driver puts packages in a "hiding place" for us here at home at no extra charge.
Incompetent "I don't care", people exist in just about every company. It's up to Fed Ex to resolve these issues if they don't want to loose business. I would continue to use Fed Ex. But if it happened to me I would then opt not to use them again.
Think twice before using a company like that to handle your packages...
