How exactly does excercise work?

is it like if you have fat legs and u start excersinging and building muscel, the fat turns into it, but ur legs are still the same size the fat is just muscle, or will they actually be skinnier,? or do you have to eat less to get thinner and then excercise to build muscle? and i heard that muscle wieghs more than fat, thats why im so confused about the whole thing. sorry if the way i tried to explain my questioned didnt make sence, i explained it the best i could.

I see exercising to lose weight, and building muscle as two different things.

When you exercise to lose weight, such as walking, jogging, running, dancing, etc… it burns calories, which will basically burn the fat…and make you skinnier.

When you do exercises to build muscle, such as sits ups, crunches, lifting weights, push ups, etc… You are burning calories (getting rid of the fat), while building muscles (which basically replaces the fat).

A person with a lot of muscle, and a person with some fat could weigh the same…but you can tell by looking at their bodies which has the muscles, and which has the fat. A person with muscles will be fitter, and skinnier than a person with fat.

It kind of hard to explain, so I hope what I said made sense…and I helped you understand a bit. :]

Angelina, if you are looking to get smaller, weights are not the way to do it, and as Angele said muscle does weigh more than fat, but when you are working weights you can increase your muscle mass and still maintain the fat you have, making you look even bigger, and in some cases fatter. If you want to lose body mass you want to do more aerobic type exercises and not muscle training, taking your circulatory system and not you muscles as much. This will burn more fat giving you a leaner overall appearance. I have seen that people who are looking to bring their mass down do yoga, swimming, and things that use more of the overall bodies muscles without tasking them to hard. When I was in the army we went for a lot more muscle mass, we called it tearing you down, and then rebuilding. What this was doing was heavy workouts with heavy weights, this would tear the muscles causing a lot of rapid growth giving us a lot of body mass, but I do not think this would be that sexy for a women.

It all depends on what kind or excersice you do, it all works for different kind of stuff, but for sure it all makes you burn fat and also make you stronger and healthier.

Answer #6

thanx, and im not looking to get smaller but i was reading questions about how to lose wieght and it made me wonder, like i have always been confused on how it works, thats why i asked

Answer #7

and i do lift wieghts but not heavy ones of course i just do it to keep my arms toned, cuz i heard if u lift the bigger ones u will get bulky

Answer #8

I think that if you really want to lean up, you need to work on getting your heart rate up. You can get your heart rate up through weight, but this is a lot harder to do, yes you are going to burn a lot of calories, but you are going to do a lot of tearing of your muscles making your body put your excess fat toward the repair of these muscles making them bigger, also with high intensity weight training you will get very hungry, and you will want to eat more, and if you do not keep up the training it is very easy to get an excess of fat.
