Okay, I apologize. I overlooked this question. He went to the Vet this morning. A little while later, they called and said it didn’t look good for him and that they were going to start hydrating him. They wanted to keep him tonight and told us to call tomorrow afternoon. They haven’t indicated what they think is wrong with him. The research that we’ve done, always came back as kidney disease. It has to be caught early for there to be any hope in saving him and I’m afraid that it wasn’t. He’s such a trooper though. If any kitty could beat the odds, he could but I didn’t think he would make it through the night. I feel so bad for him. I, actually, get sick when he’s here, (physically & mentally, emotionally). I hope the landlord doesn’t come. That would be bad. We live in a duplex and the other apt is empty except for when they come down (which is about once a month for a few days) and they are sooo nosy. They are actually looking for a pet. I’ve never seen people who don’t like animals like them. It’s just a lot of stress when they’re here. It’s a long story how we came to acquire Toonces. The story is probably somewhere on this site. If I weren’t so tired I’d go into it. Basically, he was a stray (or nwould have been). Thank you for your concern and everyone who has asked about Toonces. Carol

It’s really hard to say what to do without seeing the cat or knowing more specific symptoms…is he coughing? wheezing? breathing shallow? Depo-Medrol can be used in cats with asthma-like symptoms, and Valyum L-lysine tablets are given for kitty tracheobronchitis. If it’s shallow breathing and she’s been sick, as you’ve been saying in previous questions, he may be dying from old age…and in that case, the best thing to do is amoeba’s suggestion. Sit with him and stroke him and be there for him.

Here is a list of emergency animal hospitals near Wilmington, NC: http://local.yahoo.com/NC/Wilmington/Professional+Services/Animals+Pets/Veterinary+Emergency+Services

If you call, they will have someone answering, who should be able to give you information over the phone on what medication is and is not OK to give to him.

Good luck.

Thanks for updating us, Carol. I know it’s hard, but if it is indeed kidney disease, the best thing for him might be euthanasia. It will eliminate his suffering and also you can be there with him during that time, which gives closure to you as well.

Carol, please let us know what happens. I feel for the little guy (huge cat lover here!)

Answer #5

Don’t give him anything without talking to the vet…Cats can’t take as many human drugs as dogs can…

I’m not going to give him the Albuterol. I read a little about it and don’t feel comfortable giving it to him. His heart rate is fast already. Thanks. I wrote to Phrannie We left a message at the Vet and I dont have Medrol

Answer #7

Yes, Thank you Dara, and to everyone who has had concern for Toonces. He’s resting right now and the Vet will be picking him up @ 7 am. Then, hopefully, they can find out what’s wrong, once and for all.

I agree, I don’t want him to suffer and I feel like he is suffering now and there’s nothing I can do. I have COPD and if or when I get to the point where I can’t breathe on my own or something like that, I’d want to be ‘put to sleep’. My son tells me that he probably isn’t aware of very much at this point, but I still can’t stand the thought that he’s suffering in any way, you know? I can’t express just how much he means to me but I guess a lot of people feel this way about their pets. Thank you, Carol

Another update: Toonces has not improved but is still hanging on. (I feel so bad for him, wondering if there is anyone talking to him, telling him it’s ok, even tho it’s not). Joe’s going to be talking to them again tomorrow and is going to ask them. They’ve done blood work (I guess, based on the hydration they did) and should get the results tomorrow. I’ll let you know what they say.

Answer #10

I would not give him albuteral. rapid heart rate. what about depo-medrol? go onto the groups under “for the love of dogs” someone might be able to help. phrannie, editor, magichalo etc. if you have a medrol dospack, you could give a quarter of a pill. I know that medrol won’t hurt. but it might not be needed. call a vet and get the answering service. tell them it is an emergency.

thanks editor. you are the answer woman. :)

Answer #12

good luck. I would recommend just holding him (if he feels like it) and petting. maybe that will calm him a bit. good luck. my thoughts are with y’all.
