Why do dyslexic people stand out among the crowd?

Answer #1

Why? Because anything separate from the norm, or separate from the general majority sticks out because it’s different. However, I don’t see how a person who is dyslexic would stand out amongst a crowd, generally to stand out amongst a crowd, it’d be a result of appearance, or noise. However, in a crowd of say, writers, or authors, they could stand out due to this learning disability, or even in a school crowd where such a person would be given extra time. In the end, they are just another person, hardly distinguishable for dyslexia lest put in the right “crowd”.

It is the way you look at…if you want to separate them then you feel this way else you just accept their ways as another means of expression. They do have problem with writing skills.

I have discalcula, which is basically a maths version of dyslexia. I can read and write fine, but when it comes to maths it feels like the numbers go into my head and then break. I can only do my 2 5 and 10 times tables, any numbers over 10 and i’m lost, i have to use a calculator to work out change and let’s not even go near percentages. Before i was diagnosed i was told, i was being lazy or stupid or not trying hard enough, and that was my teachers. So i stood out because of that first, then i moved school and i started to see an educational therapist (she was amazing she helped me to realize i wasn’t stupid i just worked differently to everyone else), so kids noticed when i was leaving class for an hour and no one else was. Now that im older, people notice when i take longer to give them change or when they ask me how much somthing works out as and i have to use a calculator. The second people find out you have somthing like this they start treating you differently, trying to make things easier, maybe if people didn’t treat us differently we wouldn’t stand out as much.

Here is our problem:

Some people have a disability and just can not learn to read and write properly. These people often try very hard to learn to do it correctly and just don’t succeed.

But some other people just do not care whether their writing is correct. They don’t even try to learn to do it right.

If we do not insist on correct writing, that will encourage those who do not care to care even less. And at some point of time, this will make written communication unintellegible.

I have had this situation several times, that I needed to read a question or status update on this site more than twice in order to understand it at all. That, people, is not cute.

While it is very unfair to critisize the spelling of a person who cannot learn to write correctly, I have little understanding for those who could learn but won’t. Unfortunately, when seeing a written text, it is extremely difficult to discern one from the other.

I do not know a good solution for this.

Dyslexics brains work differently and they see the world differently from the rest of us. One thing I could never understand is how my dyslexic daughter was such a wonderful artist (far better at 6 than I was any time in my life; also many artists are dyslexic and most dyslexics are good artists) yet her handwriting looked like chicken scratching. It turns out the part of the brain we use for visual art is different than the part of the brain we use for visual symbols. She will always struggle with reading and symbols. Through extensive remediation my daughter can read above her grade level but the problem is the amount of effort involved. She can read everything she should be able to but the amount of effort it requires of her is exhausting. While she can read I do not know if it will ever come easily enough for her to read for pleasure.
