I thought they lost their copyright 70 years after death? Steinbeck has been dead for like, 40 some years.

In some jurisdictions the time is measured from the point of publication, and I think the actual duration varies with jurisdiction as well. It is a complex issue. However even if it is tecnhically still in copyright in your country, it is probable that you are safe to download the copy for your own personal non-profit use.

Check with a copyright specialist in your country if you are reluctant to take the risk. I personally would not be reluctant, though I do not condone copyright theft. Hope that does not make me sound like a hypocrite.

It wouldnt open with any of my programs, which program does it need? Adobe Reader?

Adobe Reader opens it - it is a standard .pdf file.

( so anything that reads portable document format files should open it. )
