Does anybody know..

..what equivalent -7.5 eyesight is in both eyes. I mean like 20/20 is normal vision, but what would mine be if my eyes are -7.5? I can’t find a measurement converter anywhere. xx

If you are experiencing eye strain at work than discuss this with your optometrist or ophthalmologist. You may need special occupational glasses. Your Dr. also might have advice about how to avoid problems based on the particular demands of your job.

Detached retina is a serious issue. Your ophthalmologist should have taken the time to explain your condition, prognosis and treatment, hopefully you only have this in one eye. As a severe myope you are already at higher than usual risk for retinal detachment. Marfan syndrome can weaken the connective tissues in the eye which can lead to a number of problems including this one.

With glasses I can just read the 20/15 line (generally 3rd from the bottom). The lines below that are 20/13 and 20/10. Your mom must have eagle eyes if she can read them.

ObDisclaimer, I’m neither an eye doctor nor an optician. I worked in an optical lab for a while but I’m far from an expert on the subject.

My brush with fame: When I worked at the optical lab I worked on a pair of glasses for Louis Gosset Jr. As far as I know that is the only famous person’s glasses I worked on.

-7.5 is a rather strong prescription. I don’t know of a chart that corrolates prescription strength to visual acuity. the chart that always1dering saw only gives the metric equivalent (e.g. 6/6 in metric is 20/20 in standard snelling).

Anyway, with a prescription that strong your unaided acuity would be a lot worse than 20/25.

Answer #3

By -7.5 do you mean this is what your prescription is?

Answer #5

Oh right okay. Thank you for your help. I am always told by my doctors that “oh yes, she’s slightly short-sighted” but when I take my glasses off, or my contacts out I can’t see a thing! Anyway, I was wondering if this would enable me to be registered as partially sighted because without some aid, I swear I wouldn’t be able to get by. xx

Answer #6

Sorry my eyesight is shortsighted and -7.50 on my prescription for both eyes, not 0.75, sorry for confusing people!

Answer #7

Your doctor calls you “slightly short-sighted?” With the strength of your prescription you are a pretty extreme myope.

Vision impairment is determined by your corrected vision. If your visual acuity is worse than 20/200 with correction than you are legally blind. There are other vision problems that can considered disabilities but you probably don’t qualify if you see well with your specticles.

One thing you do have to look forward to is that over time your vision will improve. As we get older we get more farsighted so as you get older your vision should improve and you won’t require as strong a prescription. Hyperopes see their vision get worse as they age.

Answer #8

I’m glad to hear my eyesight should improve!! I had to wear contacts because I ended up not being able to see the distance from my eye to my lens, and now my optician is trying me on weaker contacts because my eyes are still getting worse - might be something to do with a machine I’m on at work that strains my eyes quite bad. Can you ever see the last 3 lines of an eye chart?? I can’t, mum reads them out easy and I look at her gone out as though “oh my goodness, how can you see that!” Oh I’m supposed to have a detached retina? Don’t actually know what that means, but apparently it’s linked to Marfan’s Syndrome, which is what I’m being tested for at the minute. xx
