Should doctors have the right to determine whether or not a person is a candidate for Euthanasia?

A rather hypothetical question, considering euthanasia is not currently legalized, but with talks back on about whether or not to legalize it, do you think doctors should have the final say? With their knowledge of the ailments a person has, would they not be better able to decide if a person really needs to end their own life?

Answer #1

I think the doctors should be able to voice their opinions and tell the patient or family if they feel that its the right choice, but untimately no, they shouldnt have the final say. In the end it should be the patients or families decision otherwise i would consider it murd.er.

Answer #2

I’m not saying the doctor should decide whether or not they “will”, but rather whether or not they “should”…not to decide that a person should die, but if they should be kept alive.

Answer #3

I think family members should have the final say whether a person should be kept alive or not. It’s a difficult and personal decision, which to me is more emotional than physical.

Answer #4

Confused? Could you say that in another way?

Answer #5

lol…ok, say the patient wanted to die, but the doctor felt it wasn’t necessary…should he have the final say?

Answer #6

This gets complicated. When you say a person ‘needs’ to end their own life, at the end of the day, is there ever a time when a person ‘needs’ to end their own life? A desire to end their life, yes, but needs to? Doctors already tell people whether they are terminal or not. In a way, they already make that judgment call. Whether the person then decides to end their life early or not, that is up to them. I think doctors should honor their decision and I think euthanasia should definitely be legal. And I dont think family members should make that call. I know my family would never pull the plug. Even though I have made my wishes on that subject extremely clear. I think people should make their own decisions.

Answer #7

hmm, necessary is an interesting way of putting it? Is it ever necessary? I mean I’m for right to die, I think people should be free to make those decisions (even if they are not terminally ill). But what you are saying is the doctor the one to make the call whether a person is terminal or not? Well who else can make that call?

Answer #8

I also think euthanasia should be legal. Currently it sort of is. Doctors can prescribe whatever amount of medication necessary to control pain and with painful terminal conditions this eventually becomes a fatal dose.

If someone has a terrible quality of life and no reasonable hope of recovery it should be their right to end it. Doctors are the best judge of if the patient is beyond hope so they should have input but ultimately it should be the patient’s decision.

Answer #9

Yes i think so doctors are there to help of relive pain no matter what it takes.
