Do spiders freeze in freezing weather???

Do spiders freeze in freezing weather? Because when theres a frost I almost freeze, how do the outdoor spiders stay warm??

Answer #1

the field of spiders would look so cool but so creepy. you would think it would be off a movie where the spiders turn monster size and eat you.

I was hiking today in Dover NH. It is Jan. 1, 2010 and it’s 35 degrees. The snow on the ground is about an inch or two thick. My husband and I came across a field where about 50 small, but different sized, spiders were crossing the snow. I have never seen anything like it.

We tend to think that spiders are only warm weather creatures, ending up as spider-cicles with the first frost, or moving into our basements for the winter. The article below, however, states that up to 55 species of spiders in Canada remain active under the snow for up to six months. Subnivean (under snow) temperatures can range from -3° to -6° C. The air in this microclimate is relatively warm and moist compared to the air above the snow, but it is still below freezing. The spiders may be able to combat freezing with cryo-protectants and other antifreeze compounds.

They don’t stay outdoors.

They hide away in people’s homes or under the ground, in trees…anywhere they can find warmth.
