All varieties of tuber vegetables sold in the USA as yams are actually different strains of sweet potatoes. They get their name from the African nyami, but they are not true yams. Real yams don't even necessarily grow underground.
Yams have brown sugar how them, and Sweet Potatoes just have butter on them. And I think mainly people in the south call them yams, and people up north call them sweet potatoes. Who knows?
Yams are longer and larger. Sweet potatoes are more round, and smaller. They are each members of different orders . Yams are of the order Dioscorealis, sweet potatoes are Solanales.
Yams are the sweet potatoes with brown sugar and marshmallows. Also Called "candied yams". Sweet potatoes are just potatoes. No added ingredients. :) either way tastes great!

I do believe the only differance is yams dont have brown sugar and marshmallows on them and sweet potatoes do
