A hospice is for terminally ill patients. People who are going to die in a few weeks/months. They are basically there to die. They generally have an illness. A nursing/retirement home is for the elderly.

exactly what Marina said they are in home care my mom is on that instead of being in a nursing home she has hospis its sort of like in home services and out patient services maybe the same thing

This is correct. Hospice care, like other kinds of nursing, can be offered either at home or in an institutional setting. What sets it apart is the expectation of the patient’s imminent death. The field was more or less invented by Elisabeth Kubler Ross, author of “On Death and Dying.”
