generally they’re pretty understanding when it comes to personal difficulties, the thing is you need to talk to someone about it… your advisor is probably the first person to go to in a situation like that

no I wan’t caught drinking or anything my mother suffered a stroke and it was hard to focus to through the semester.

generally it depends on what else you were doing… if you just fail a semester (and weren’t like caught drinking or whatever) then they’d most likely put you on academic probation after a semester
