Can cold medicine cause you to fail a urine analysis?

I had to go take a urine test last thursday for a job that has just hired me. I do not use any dr.ugs however, i have been using wal-phed (walgreens version of sudafed) to fight a cold since last tuesday. I have been waiting for them to call and let me know when to start…but its Monday and still no call. Is it possible that the cold medicine made me fail? I plan on calling them this afternoon about the status of my test and employmet. If i failed due to this cold medicine…is there anything i could do? I really want this job.

Answer #1

i dont think u can fail becuz of that.. it takes a while for them to get it to the lab and all that… sudafed is ok.. dont worry.. it was the cold medicine my doc precribed when i was pregnant so im sure there is nothin in there to make ya fail a test

Answer #2

Hmmm …. Sudafed contains pseudoephedrine which can some up as a positive for Amphetamines … check the ingredients on the package, if it contains pseudoephedrine, ephedrine, or phenypropanolamine, then you might in trouble.

Answer #3

not usually, especially if it’s a test used specifically to detect DR.UGS (i.e., urine analysis). however, sometimes it can cause a false positive for amphetamine in less sensitive tests

Answer #4

i copied that last one from answers.com.. so i dunno.. that wont be good will it.. i hope not mandyloo.. i would call and if they do say somethin tell ur situation and re take the test.. Good luck:)

Answer #5

No, It can’t There’s not enough in your system.

Answer #6

Not That Med.. I Don’t Think.. Unless Maybe Could Think amphetamine? Can You Retake It? Most Cold Meds Have Decongestants Which Are Stimulants

Answer #7

I think so because some cold medicines if not all have an ingredient called ephedrine which is the one of the main ingredients when making meth.

Answer #8

There are different tests used for employee substance use screening. Cheaper and less sophisticated tests are susceptible to false positives.from common medications and foods. There are sophisticated tests that can discriminate between ephedrine and amphetamines, poppy seeds and opiates, ibuprofen and ganja etc. but these tests are expensive. Most labs divide your urine sample and first test with one of the less discriminating tests then if it tests positive use a more expensive and accurate test to confirm. The most accurate test is gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. If you do test positive than you should ask how your sample was tested. If it was tested on-site with a single test you should ask to be re-tested at a lab using the GC/MS method. In general you should refuse to work for companies that require substance screening. What you do on your own time is your business and substance testing is an invasion of your privacy. Both my daughter and I take medications for bona fide medical conditions that substance screening tests for. These tests would require us to disclose medical conditions to potential employers and open ourselves up for discrimination.
