Mostly, it's bad lighting.
In photo shoots and things like that, they have excellent lighting..but on the set of a movie or TV show, on the red carpet, inside a house, etc... there isn't always the best lighting.
It's the great equalizer in life...it's fate's way of kicking u in the gut and saying "life's a bitch, deal with it" :) Or u have a sucky camera and your photographer sucks as well lol.
You have to learn how to pose for the camera, you want to keep your shoulders facing more toward the camera, and turn you hips more to the side, this will make you look thinner.
Doing this can also help bring out your butt a little while making your boos or chest more pronounced. I guess going to all them fashion shows with my wife has paid off. :)
pearsonaly i tthink people just think it does becuz thats how they portray themselves. people think that they are fatter than they are.
Another reason is the angles.
