what are these called, there similar to leaks but very thin?

Answer #1

They could be green onions (also known as scallions - see image).

Another possible option is chives, but chives are even thinner than the green onion and are considered more as an herb than part of the onion family.

Either one can be eaten raw and are popular toppings for salads and chicken dishes, but chives offer a hint of garlic flavouring to a dish, while scallions taste like mildly-flavoured onions.

Answer #2

These are Spring onions also known as Scallions, green onions, spring onions, salad onions, table onions, green shallots, onion sticks, long onions, baby onions, precious onions, yard onions, gibbons, or syboes.

Botanically they belong to the Allium species and are part of the oinon family Amaryllidaceae.

They are perfectly edible.
