What do you buy a family for Christmas when you hardly know them and several members are diabetic?

So this year my boyfriends family is having christmas with his brothers girlfriends family, and its up to me to think of a good gift for the family as my boyfriend never thinks of this stuff. I have only met them once, so I dont really know a lot about what they like, and food is unfortunately out, as it doesnt seem like a good idea to give chocolate etc to type two diabetics. What other generic gifts are they that are not food?

Answer #1

Get them some diabetic chocolate,it’s a bit more expensive than normal chocolate, but you get them at health shops and even health sections of grocery stores. Generally also around Christmas time they make up diabetic baskets at stores (just ask) containing, nuts, dried fruit and diabetic chocolate.

Answer #2

I like that idea. Somehow I never think about things like nuts and dried fruit for christmas - my mind goes straight to guylian chocolates!

Answer #7

My cousin is diabetic, and we buy him diabetic chocolate. He appreciates it because it is quite expensive and most people ‘can’t be bothered’ going to the extra trouble of finding a store that stocks it buying it. Alternatives for people that you don’t really know are: Photo frames, candles, spa-sets, mall (westfield) vouchers, movie vouchers (movie-money vouchers), writing sets with paper and envelopes, cook books (maybe a diabetic cookbook?), flowers, salad servers, salad bowls. That’s all I can think of! I wrote a How To on buying presents for people who are hard to buy for. It may help you? Not sure… http://www.funadvice.com/howto/buy_present_difficult_person

Answer #8

You get them gift cards. Or candels.

Answer #9

diabetic chocolate is worse for diabetics than normal chocolate..

at least that was the case when i was kid growing up…

it contains or i should say contained [as they might have changed the recipe over 25 years] a lot more fat that normal chocolate, so my dietitian told me anyway.

Answer #10

Actually I know a lovely Belgian man who makes the most amazing diabetic chocolate and its actually really good for you. Its low in fat, and he only uses natural sweeteners (not sugar obviously!). Its pretty expensive but worth it!
