Building a community does this article give us any good guidance?

I’m a member / reader of many communities online. One of them deals mostly with webmaster / marketing issues, and today somebody posted there this interesting link: http://headrush.typepad.com/creating_passionate_users/2006/12/how_to_build_a_.html

Which is about how to build communities, more or less, what we’re trying to do here. From time to time, I ask “what can we do better”…and in this case, what I’d really, really like is if anybody reading this could click the link & read through that article - then come back & post your thoughts.

Or, if you have ideas of the top of your head - shout ‘em out. We’re listening.

I wonder if you put the terms of use under the identification of each person…along with add me as a friend, ask me a question? That way it is more visible a more likely to be read? Sue

Hi, Well I read the article and it was good…it had a lot of useful info in it. I think the biggest problem comes from unanswered questions. There should be a way (or particular advisor) who takes up this slack. There are no stupid questions but when you offer a motivation to ask the most questions I think it’s inevitable you will get “strange questions” Perhaps they could be answered privately and then deleted from the thread. How do you get people to be nice when answering questions??? Good question…immediate monitoring of threads probably is the only way and delete them as they arise. I like the idea of one advisor per topics…How do you handle bad advice that could be dangerous especially if you don’t know the answers yourself…like self-abuse, suicidal thoughts, and troubled relationships. what liability do you face if someone indeed follows bad advice and the outcome ends up being tragic? Do you have a source to report to of dangerous activities. It is inevitable this will happen. Running a site like this comes with great responsibilities and it is always best to err on the side of caution. Sue

it is always best to err on the side of caution.

Absolutely. I used to help moderate a very large site for about three years, spent perhaps ~15 hours per week volunteering, consistantly. During my job (as it was job related, so it was OK) I had it open in a browser window, etc.

This is our disclaimer: http://www.funadvice.com/doc/terms

which hasn’t been updated in a while, but does cover a few things (eg, you use the site at your own risk, if you don’t agree, don’t post etc).

However, we should probably add acceptance of terms to the sign up process - I’ll make a not of that.
