Well, if you flat out tell him, then that might make him upset. The best way is to just say "Hey, let's do something together. How about joining a gym, or walking outside everyday for a few hours?" Also, if you want to really be serious about staying fit, cut down on fast foods, candies, and sodas. Trust me, as soon as I stopped drinking soda, I lost 3lb. of fat from all the sugars in the sodas.
You don't have to eliminate junk food, but try not to eat as much. Also, what kind of "work out" result are you looking for? Lean & Thin or Muscular & Mass? If you need help on what kind of body part you want to improve on, you can PM me for a workout routine. I have tons of routines for toning, mass, isolations, and strength.

It can be hard, I know from experience. Once you start though, it's difficult to stop, trust me. Once I started working out seriously, it's become a part of my life rather than just an hour in the gym. At home on my off days(I rest 2 days a week), I find myself doing push ups while watching TV. Lol. I can help you if you want. If you think he's just not a "fitness" type, then I can give you exercises that will slowly get him in the direction to start being fitter.
