can new born babies have depression?

Answer #1

No, i dont believe that their brain functions in a way have depression that early on. There are moody, cranky, and colicky babies but it would be considered infantile depression.

Answer #2

They can actually show signs of certain mental illnesses and depression, however it won’t be the typical moodswings and general symptoms like with older children because newborns don’t yet have the emotional capabilities and abilities like older children. Generally heriditary depression starts showing from an older age, maybe 5 or 6. Newborns and babies can also show signs of other mental disorders such as schizophrenia (I read an interesting article once about a child with this condition and she showed signs almost from the day she was born)

You might want to read this, the internet seems quite limited on infant depression. I don’t think it is a subject that has been researched that much.

Answer #6

I don’t think babies can meet the diagnostic criteria for depression.

Some babies are happier than others though. Everyone tells me my daughter was the happiest baby they ever saw. She hardly ever cried, she might seem a little fussy when she was hungry or needed a change, a burp, or a hug but it was rare that she ever cried. I see other parents with colicky babies that cry almost constantly.

Answer #11

Possibly. I read an interesting study once on babies that die from SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) and they found that in many of the affected children their seratonin levels were lower, which is linked to depression. Depression can be caused simply by a chemical imbalance in the brain, therefore I think this could occur in babies also.
