What is the Berlin Wall?

it was the wall between east and west germany.

It was a wall that divded geremany into 2 parts. East and West Geremany. The point of the wall was to seperate Communism and Democratic Geremany

its been destroyed tho it was a hated wall

After WW2 Germany was split between four countries, and Berlin was also split. But the split meant that different governments were in operation in the different halves of the city. The was erected in 1961 because more than 2.6 million East Germans escaped to West Berlin or West Germany from 1949 to 1961 (which was a lot - the population of East Germany was about 17 million at the time). They moved ‘cause life in the West was much better than in the East after 1948. West Germany including West Berlin had got financial help through the Marshallplan from the USA. In East Germany a communist system was established and many people had to suffer under repressions of the Communist party. There was nothing the East Berlin Government could to to stop this migration so they established a wall overnight. It literally cut between houses. If you lived in the East and were staying with a friend in the West then you’d be trapped on the other side when you awoke the next morning. People couldn’t get to work and there was uproar. People trying to cross were shot. That’s just a brief history but it’s a really interesting subject.. :)
