How can I avoid such a high sodium intake?

So I’m 19, about 140 pounds, 6’1” and healthy by my doctors standards. I recently came into some information that you only are supposed to take in about 2500 mg of sodium a day, I checked all the stuff I eat which is generally pretty high in sodium (I’m a poor college student).. I eat a lot of ramen, canned soups, chips, peanut butter/cheese crackers, and snack cakes, I have a really high metabolism so I don’t gain any weight but I noticed after looking through all the foods I buy from the grocery store and calculating my daily intake of said foods that I’m probably getting about 4000-4500 mg of sodium a day which is about 1500-2000 more mg of sodium then I should be getting.. How can I reduce this, I’m broke and usually processed foods are cheap and it’s hard for me to buy some of the more expensive health foods?? Any cheap alternatives or things that I can add to my diet to either reduce or balance my sodium intake.. Any tips would be helpful, please remember I am broke as anything, I work at zaxby’s/pay for my school so whole foods, or any of that crap is pretty much out of the question…

No, you can’t really do anything about it aside from limiting the amount of high-sodium products you consume in a day or cut a few out. It’s usually cruddy if you’re on a low budget, but if you go with limitation and switching to things that have ‘low in sodium’ marked on them instead of the full-blown thing, you should generally be okay. Foods with lower sodium usually don’t cost more than the real stuff.

Alternatively, you could purchase a pack of noodles and a container of chicken, beef, or vegetable bouillon to make soup with. If you want, you could even buy a few vegetables to throw in. The noodles should only be about $1 - $2 per bag, the bouillon maybe $4 or $5, and the vegetables maybe $2 or $3, depending on what you want. Since you’re buying a bag, container and such of the ingredients, you’ll get your money’s worth out of it. It is cheap still, and it still is much healthier than what you’d buy pre-made.

As for more cheap foods, do you enjoy rice? A bag of rice, a few veggies, and some soya sauce can go very far. With rice, you also get a lot of uses out of a bag and, again, you can control your sodium intake.

You CAN eat healthy on a low budget. I did it while I was in college. You just have to calculate and plan ahead.

Answer #4

Cut down your salt intake. You will find that the processed things you are eating have a considerable amount of salt put into them, and you are perhaps putting even more salt on these yourself. This will only lead to high blood pressure and potentially more serious problems down the line.
