Who do you think is the greatest athlete alive or dead? After watching Michael Phelps its clear he could be...but then you could throw in Lance Armstrong so who do you think is the greatest athlete alive?
I don't consider Lance Armstrong to even be the greatest cyclist of all time.
Armstrong did win 7 Tours which is more than any other cyclist in history but the TdF is the only race he rode seriously.
Miguel Indurain won 5 Tours but also won 2 Giro d' Italias and in '91 when he won both the Tour and the Giro he placed 2nd in the Vuelta. He also won the '96 Olympic time trial.
Bernard Hinault won 5 Tours but also also 3 Giros, 2 Vueltas, many more classics classics than Lance and the 1980 Olympic road race.
Eddy Merckx won 5 Tours, 5 Giros, 1 Vuelta, and was world cycling champion 3 times.
Indurain, Hinault, and Merckx were not able to peak for one event like Lance did, they were expected to race all season and win races for their sponsors.
Otto Grahm, NFL Quarteback. Being a great athlete doesn't mean good at your chosen sport, it means a great athlete period. although Otto played for 10 years, he QB in 10 National Championship games and won 7.
He was also a quest at Wimbelton where at the time the Champ had a serve that many professional tennis player had a difficult time returning, Otto returned his serves 10 out of 10 times, he was 63 years old when he he did it. And Otto was not a professional tennis player or did he compete.
Pele. greatest soccer player that ever lived. fast as hell and aggresive.
I'd go with Wayne Gretzky, Phelps, and Micheal Jordan
a nice 3-way tie
