Asian president?

Hey just wondering? If someday an Asian man/woman becomes a major presidential nominee, will you consider voting for him/her?

Answer #1

What do Americans have against Siberians? I’d totally vote for a Siberian. What a silly question.

Answer #2

Has integrity and solid core values…gets my vote !!

Answer #3

Could you explain why it’ s silly then?

It’s absolutely true that there are many people out there who vote based on race or gender or sexual orientation etc

and btw Im talking about Asian Americans. However, you cant vote for a Siberian (as opposed to a Siberian American, which I dont think actually officially exists) as he is not even an American citizen!

Answer #4

OK here’s a stat for you to chew on:

according to wikipedia, which is sourced from some other website, 23% of Americans say they will not vote for an Asian President, as opposed to 12% for a black candidate, or 38% for a Muslim one

Answer #5

Well, if you’re asking for my opinion then I would have to say that I could care less where someone is from or what they look like. If they can do the job then they have my vote.

But of course this is just MY opinion

Answer #6

“Anyway, a candidate’s ethnic background has no bearing on his or her ability to do the job.”

It shouldn’t, but unfortunately there are stereotypes associated with every race. Just look at Obama. That’s why Im asking this question

Yeah and Im talking about the US :)

Answer #7

I guess they forgot to ask them why when they took that poll…Keeping in mind, polls aren’t terribly accuate, and rarely does one poll match another…23% seems high…maybe part of that 23% are WWII Vets who fought in the Pacific? When I was growing up in the 60’s there was still a lot of prejudice towards Japanese from the older crowd (which pretty much was inclusive of orientals in general)…

For myself…I’ll vote for whoever’s policies reflect how I think…I don’t give a diddley about race.

Answer #8

I agree, as long as the persons political stance is in accordance with my values and beliefs- I would not hold race or gender against a presidential candidate. on the flip side of the race argument- voting FOR someone solely based on their gender or race is just as wrong as NOT voting for that person because of their gender or race. ( racial bigotry works both ways) and that is why race should not enter into the equation. the values, morals, and political background of a candidate, and how they plan to tackle the big issues of the country- should be behind every vote this november. so yes, I would vote for an ASIAN as long as their political stance was something that I agreed with.

Answer #9

There are all kinds of reasons voters won’t vote for a specific candidate, many of them pretty ignorant. For example, we will see an asian, jewish, arab, or even a gay president before we ever see an openly atheist president. (on second thought, it might be a toss up with a gay president)

We as a society must move past those people who vote based on ignorance, and move the country forward. They will become less and less relevant as time goes on.

Answer #10

You’re talking about the US, right? Just checking…lot of nationalities on here.

Anyway, a candidate’s ethnic background has no bearing on his or her ability to do the job. I’m sure there are some people out there who would not vote for a person based solely on ethnicity. But another problem for potential minority presidents is there are those who accuse people of racism for opposing their candidacy, thus making their race even more of an issue.

Answer #11

I third mikeh and phrannie regarding the inaccuracy of that poll. It’s very unlikely almost a quarter of the current US population would vote against a presidential candidate because he or she is an Asian-American.

Answer #12

What about Siberian Americans? It’s a silly question because you’re limiting Asia to Japan, China, Korea, and Vietnam. You can’t say “Asian” without including Siberia, Cyprus, Bahrain, Kazakhstan, and Yemen. I find it difficult to believe that 23% of Americans stated that they wouldn’t vote for someone of Yemeni decent.
