Are tongue piercings that dangerous?

I was supposed to get my tongue pierced but then I searched information on google and read a lot of nasty things then saw some really sick pictures of them gone wrong. I was so disgusted I could feel my stomach turn. Am I over reacting by deciding not to get one because of the things I saw/read?

I have my tongue pierced and I too before I had it done was researching it over the internet (which is good of you, which shows your careful) and came across stories of it going wrong and pictures. HOWEVER you must realise that these people either did it themselves and sold their story to look cool or went to an unprofessional parlour and got infected.

As long as you go to a respectable and well known piercing shop then it should be ok. The piercer will explain how to clean it etc and give you advice. Any questions or worries you will have before and after they will answer.

What they really do is clean your tongue and tell you to gargle some mouth wash and spit into a nearby sink. They look for the major vein in your tongue and decide where the right place is to be. If they have any doubts they will call in a colleague and ask their opinion. Do not be alarmed if they do, it shows that they want a second opinion. They put a pen mark on it and ask you if you are happy with where it will be. You should say yes even if it’s too far back, the reason for this is because there maybe no other place to pierce it, everyone’s tongue is different. They use a needle nowadays not guns or any other equipment but they do not numb it! Usually they pierce it from top to down as it is less painful, but some piercers may feel more comfortable doing it the other way. Yes it does hurt a little, it depends on your pain threshold, but it is sooo worth it afterwards.

I now can’t imagine my tongue without the ball in it. Go for it if you are really sure. Look at it this way if you get fed up with it in the future you can take it out

Agree’d. I got my nose done with a gun when I was 12-years-old. And I know for sure places still use them. At the time I didn’t know any better but now I do.

Answer #4

To Sarah 101: Your stupid, get an education… If you take care of it by brushing your teeth and using mouthwash it will not get infected. How would you see someone on the streets and see their toungue piercing anyway.

if you truly want your tongue pierced, do your homework! make sure you ask around to find a CLEAN, reputable piercing parlor. all of the instruments should be sealed in sterilized packages right up until the piercer is ready to use them. The facilities should be clean, and the piercer should wear steril gloves. and make sure BEFORE you get pierced that you discuss all of the possibilities…good, bad, and ugly…with your piercer. You may be in a bit of pain after the piercing and not be so apt to remember to ask certain questions or maybe wont even remember the answers you get! AND, he/she should not be afraid to tell you of the bad things to watch for. if you only hear praises about it, and nothing bad to watch for, like infection…get out of there fast! Good luck!!!

yes they can be very dangerouse its true that you shouldnt believe everything you read but its safe to be aware of side affects and things that can go wrong weather you get it is completely up to you theres a very low chance that your tounge ring will turn out looking like those pictures but theres always that small possibility with everyone, and with every peircing thats why you go to a tusted profesional and make find out you arnt allergic to the metals or anything like that and dont go anywere that uses a gun!!

I have mine done I have had it for 2 years if you go to a person that knows what they are doing and listen to everything they say you shouldn’t have any problem I still clean mine evey other day and take it out for a couple days to let my tounge rest but I wouldn’t do that until I had it for a while I just got a wild hair and went and got it done I’d do it again if I had to one of my friends had his done 2*

omfg, DO NOT get a tounge piercing. they are sooo gross!!! did you no, that most people that get tounge piercing, they’re toune swells up and gets all infected and gross. its not a good look. and I pass people in the streets will tounge piercings and the first thing I think of is, omg they have a tounge piercing, gross. it doesnt look cool, and if you want to get a swelled-up, infected tounge, be my guest. do not let people peer preasure into getting a tounge piercing. go for a belly-button piercing, that looks hot and is much prettier…

If you go to a professional piercing shop and make sure to keep it clean and clear of things like food, you’ll be fine. You have veins running under your tongue that could cause you to bleed out if hit. The piercer will make sure to avoid these. And in regards to the post referring to guns; those aren’t used on anything but ears. NOBODY pierces a tongue with a gun. In fact, they don’t make guns that could do that. The guns pierce with either 18 or 20 gauge posts, which is too small for a tongue piercing (as well as every other piercing.)
