I think the most promising solution will be to harvest fast growing “ green manures “ (there are several crops that meet the criteria) and then allow them to decompose via a fermentation process, to form methane gas. This can then be liquified to produce a fuel that can be used like diesel / petrol.

We will never run out of oil. Once we pump all the oil out of the ground we will squeeze it from tar sands then grind up oil shale to get more.

The thing is that oil will get more expensive as it gets more difficult to produce.

As oil prices go up other energy sources will become more attractive.
