Aerobic grid for fish tanks

I picked up a fish tank from a redemption center what is an aerobic grid for fish tanks?

Basically the fish need two things for a clean, healthy environment: air and nutrient removal. For nutrient removal all you need something with lots of surface area, like gravel or foam. Typically this stuff is put inside some kind of GRID to hold it in while still letting water pass through. Then micro-organisms will grow on it and eat the nutrients from fish waste. They also need air which makes them AEROBIC. These things might also be called a biofilter. But be careful, I’ve seen a lot that were just a small piece of plastic that doesn’t have much surface area like gravel does; I don’t see how there’s room for anything to grow on that. Anyway you gotta clean it regularly to keep the micro-organisms from forming a thick slime and clogging it. You can also remove nutrients with plants. For air you can get some kind of bubbler or waterfall.
