Advice for My Dogs Breathing Issue

My dog is 11 years old now. She is in overall good health. Lately I have noticed that when she lays down or is resting she begins to breathe loudly through her nose, almost as if she is snoring. I have heard her snore before but lately it has been constant. Even when she is just laying down with her eyes open just relaxing. When she is up or just in a sitting position she is completely fine. Should I be worried at all? I am wondering if it is just perhaps allergies or should I be concerned that it is something more serious? Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Your dog takes breaths between 10 and 30 times a minute. The normal breathing rate is dependent on size, being slower in large individuals and faster in smaller ones. You need to become accustomed to your dog’s breathing pattern, including the normal signs that the dog makes as it breathes in and out. This knowledge will make it easier for you to detect and changes from the normal pattern - more information: http://www.gopetsamerica.com/dog-health/breathing-disorders.aspx

My Westie started this exact same thing when she was 12 (breathing more labored when laying down…snoring…like I thought she had something in her nose even)…I had her lungs xrayed. thinking perhaps chronic brochitus or something…what it was was her heart was enlarging with old age, and pressing on her trachea, making it harder to breath…she died last September at 15…so there’s LOTS of life left even with an enlarged heart…

Why not take her in and get her an “old dog wellness check”…that way the Vet can make her golden years healthier, happier…and far less worry for you…honest, there’s a lot to be said for not having to worry constantly…and we seem to do that with our older dogs. An 11 year old Lab is a “golden girl”…
