How to approach the doctor about my ADD/ ADHD treatment?

I have had adhd when I was 2 1/2 Treated with Ritalin/Adderall till I wasl 3 My mom noticed I was to calm So I stoped taking it by 3 Through out elementary I noticed I was not as active as others It seemed I needed to put more effort in things like completing tasks Then the other kids who made every little task seem so basic to them It wasnt till I started middle school when things got bad In 6th grade I barely passed the year with C’s and D’s 7th grade with LOW D’s I’m in 8th grade and things seem so difficult for me Lately I found myself losing focus in class, I make a lot of careless mistakes In schoolwork, chores, or well in other activities. I find it excessive and dont know how to avoid that I seem to lose things I need to complete tasks like pens or pencils Or when I have my socks and need to find my shoes I tend to lose my socks by the time I find my shoes I find it more and more difficult to do tasks that require very little efforts When I try to read I book I would read everything throughly but forget everything detail/important part of the story When someone is talking to me I tend to not notice they are saying something to me Until they tap my shoulder or I look and see them looking at me I recently told my mom about this and at first she didnt believe me Then She took me to a doctor who was conservative at diagnosing people and Prescribing medications I spoke with him for a while Then he says I have Adhd Imperative I didnt know what that meant but he prescribed Me 10 mgs of Focalin Xr to start of with Then 20 mgs He said that it was just for school Or when I need to complete school work over the weekends I have been taking it for a month And my problems Have seriously gotten worse I feel so much more un alert when I’m on it And it makes everything so much more of a blur What I had told him to begin with was that I would often Forget things needed for tasks But now I find it affecting me so much More out of school And I dont know what to do I spoke with my mom a couple of days ago and haven’t taken it in about 5 days She says maybe the dr needs to change the medication and scheduled And appointment for sometime this week She seemed very doubtful about it though And it took quite a while for her to even consider scheduling a appointment I dont know what to tell my doctor or even what to do? I’ve heard storys that Amphetamines work better dealing with this But I dont know how to bring this up with my doctor I dont know what to tell him I dont think that by any means I have adhd But more like add How can I approach my doctor about this the correct way With out him being so doubtful as my mom may make him about me?

It sounds more like its ADD because of the concentration thing!! I have ADHD I was diagnosed at the same time as you! I find it very hard to cencertrate to and didnt do well at school due BAD behaivour threw feeling I never had my way or people didnt understand me!! The meds I swear made me worse and lazy, mornings were the worst I felt like SH*T of my ritalin!! I stopped very young I think it was on and off up untill I was 9!

Tell your doctor in total confidence every thing you have just written, if he doesnt want to help ask if he will do tests! You need to get every little bit of info off your chest because if not he’ll pass it of with something else (doctors do that a lot I think:( ) so be confident and calm evry thing should be fine!!

Goood Luck peace x

You analysed and wrote out your own symptoms very well! Most of us aren’t able to think so clearly about our own difficulties.

So, if you show a list like the one you’ve written, including the ways you think your problems have got worse since beginning the medication, then I think he will find that very helpful.

BUT, I think you have to be careful about asking for different treatment, because he feels professionally confident of making his own choices, and will be a bit insulted if you try to make suggestions. (I’m not saying that’s good, I’m just saying it’s human nature.)

So my advice is to show him your list of symptoms, with the change in symptoms clearly shown. Tell him that you have noticed this change and are concerned about it. Then just ask for his advice - that way you leave him free to make the medical decisions and don’t damage his ego. I think he’ll take you seriously if you present yourself intelligently (as you have done here) and don’t question his decisions - let him question them himself once he’s seen the facts!

Very best of luck…
