8 month old lab grabbing with teeth

Hi,

All of the sudden my 8 month old lab grabs my 4 yo with her teeth. She doesn’t mark him and the time it seems to be happening is when he is trying to snuggle or kiss her. Any ideas why all of the sudden she would do this? She has never done it before. I know she is teething but this behavior can’t happen. Help!

Thanks for your advice. I know this behavior is a warning signal and cannot happen. She has only done this twice, in the past few days. I have a vet appt. with her next week and will discuss it further with them. Since it came on so abruptly, I want to make sure she isn’t ill. I have also enrolled her in an obedience class, one that my child can attend with her. I think its important that she learns he is not a puppy or dog and this behavior is not acceptable. We have had her since she was 5 1/2 weeks old and we have an older lab who is 2. He has never reacted this way either so my guard is automatically up. Up til now, she has never reacted this way either, she is always very loving and sweet. I do have to say though, she is still getting teeth. My other lab was late in getting them too.

Thanks again.

Correction…correction…correction!! I can’t tell you how important this is for your baby…The pup sees her as another pup, and is telling baby “I don’t want to cuddle”…or it may just be play…but dogs don’t understand that people skin (particularily baby skin) is not tough like dog skin…

She shouldn’t be putting her mouth on anybody, you, hubby or baby…cease and desist all wrestling and rough hand to mouth fun and games…let her play with toys, throw balls, etc…you want her to learn to keep her mouth to herself.

Hello

8 month old Labs are not teething. She needs to be corrected right away. You child is irritating her and she is trying to let him and you know she does not like it. You have warning signals all over this situation.

A 4 year old can be very irritating to dog of any age. The 4 year old may need to be told to give the dog a break. I am not there but I would not chance my dog or child on this situation and would correct it right away.

I have been watching my 5 year old grandson, I love this child with all my heart but he could irritate a saint. He is so cute but could cause a dog that has never hurt a fly to go off. I keep an eye on him around all my dogs and he has been raised with them.

Have you done any Obedience Classes with your Lab pup? They are always a great idea, even if you have had dogs all your life. A class is always a good way to teach and learn with this dog. It is a great way to develop a bond and respect with your dog.

My advice is separate and watch closely. Give dog and child a break.

Well, it may be that your toddler is getting older. She may have treated him like a puppy before but now she sees him as getting too big. They do this when they are weaning their pups too. I would call an animal trainer and ask what options are available. Sam
