How should I do this?

Alrighty, so I am 19 years old, and never have had a job due to circumstances beyond my control. Embarassing, yes. Anyways, because I live in a rural area, it is impossible to find any work within walking distance, and yes I have money to buy a car but nothing I’ve looked at has been roadworthy. For those asking, my budget is $1500 or less, and I haven’t been picky I’m looking at everything from a Geo Metro (not joking) on up. So far everythings been either way overpriced, junk, or both. Sooo in my despair, I put an ad up on Craigslist asking if anyone had a pickup truck (what I really want) with an auto transmission (only type I can drive) for sale.

I got an email from a fellow in the next town over, saying that he has an old pickup truck for sale. I’ll spare the details, except its 23 y/o and sounds from the description like a very nice truck. This man says he’s a disabled Vietnam Vet, he was in the USMC. He is asking 2500 for the truck or best offer. I told him that I don’t have that much money, but I’d be willing to do labor as trade. Sounds pretty good so far.

I haven’t told my parents yet, because just like everything else I try to do they would discourage the idea.

Anyways… I don’t know what kind of work would need to be done, but if its anything construction or wiring I have a friend I could count on to help me with that, as he is trained for all that stuff. I have no way of getting to the guys house. I could borrow a friends car, but that would only be for one day. Any suggestions?

I think you are on the right path. If you have no problem with the truck being old…and it is what you want then go for it. Just make sure you test it out, and look at it…or have someone else look at it, to make sure it works properly. Maybe you could get your parents to take you over there and stuff…I am sure they wouldn’t mind since you are trying to get your own car so that you will be able to drive yourself around. If I were you, I would make a written contract with the guy, and you both sign it. This way it is clear of what work you are supposed to do in order to pay the car off, and there won’t be any confusion. These types of things end up in small claims court a lot. So, a written contract is always good to have.

Bring your parents and check out the truck. It is possible that he took very good care of it and even though it is old it wil be more then road worthy. Definately get something in writing regarding working off the rest of the payment. Make sure it states what your time is worth and how your time will be tracked if you agree to a certain amount of hours worked.
