My aunt brought a new pet rat as her old one died due to a respiratory problem but the person in the pet shop said that sawdust caused the respiratory problem and that it is not good for them is this true?? if so what would b another option to use for bedding that is cheap and does not harm the pet??

In what way? You’re not very specific… A few things I have learned from working with lab rats though which may help you would be that they are quite intelligent and love new toys. If it has the same one for too long, it loses its novelty and they get bored with them, so you should rotate them. They are happiest when they are housed with other rats (same sex unless you want a heck of alot of them!) as they are highly social. This cant really be replaced with attention from you, for one thing, they are nocternal, so they like company at night, when they are most active. They are quite senstive to temperatures so they should ideally be in a room between 7 and 24 degrees celcius (i think thats 45 and 75 F but not too sure). The bigger the cage, the better. Clean the cage regularly (I cleaned my pet rats out everyday) because the droppings give off ammonia. You need some kind of litter (NOT cat litter!!!) to absorb droppings - in the lab, we use one made from corn. They also like bedding such as shredded paper.

thats cool, you can add detail to your question when you post them by typing after the title. Eg. How do I add detail to my question? You just type it after you ask your question. Make sense?

Answer #7

Oh,now you are specific, sorry for before. Firstly the cage should be big, preferably with levels, your rat will love that as they love to climb. For bedding i would suggest either paper based or fabric based. You can simply find some comfy facric around the house or just cut a lot of paper strips also.Dont use wood chips or stuff like that, they are harmful.
